In health care, keeping your skills current is central to protecting patients. For nurses in South Dakota, competence is shown mainly through documented practice rather than a fixed number of course hours; for nursing assistants, employers typically require a valid CPR certificate to work. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Registered and licensed practical nurses in South Dakota renew their licence through the South Dakota Board of Nursing. The state does not set a fixed number of continuing-education hours; instead, nurses demonstrate ongoing competence through documented practice and attest to it at renewal.

Under the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act, a nurse remains accountable for maintaining the knowledge and skills that safe practice requires — including the ability to respond to a clinical emergency and to initiate basic life-saving measures — even where no specific course-hour count is imposed.

South Dakota does not impose a state-wide mandatory continuing-education hour standard for these professions: competence is met through practice hours (140 hours in 12 months or 480 hours over 6 years), attested at renewal. Keeping resuscitation and first-aid skills current is still expected and is typically employer-driven; because there is no CE-hour mandate, a CPR course does not count toward a licensure CE requirement — it meets an employer or facility standard instead.

For support staff, South Dakota's 75-hour nurse aide certification does not itself mandate CPR, but long-term-care and home-care employers commonly require a valid CPR certificate — often to be obtained within four months of hire — in addition to the aide training. A recognized standalone certificate meets that hiring requirement for Certified Nurse Aides, and must be renewed to stay valid.
